What is a VIN, and where do I find it?
A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is the unique 17-character code stamped on every road vehicle since 1981. It never contains the letters I, O, or Q, and it encodes the make, model year, engine, and assembly plant. You'll find it on the driver-side door-jamb sticker, etched at the base of the windshield on the driver's side, and printed on your vehicle registration and insurance documents.
This checker is free. It decodes the VIN and merges open safety recalls from the US (NHTSA) and Canada (Transport Canada) into one view, alongside known failure modes clustered from public NHTSA complaint data. It is informational only — not legal or purchase advice, and not a vehicle-history report: it makes no claims about accidents, title status, liens, or odometer readings.
